Filter companies by industry

The companies page now filters by industry. Pick Fintech and you get 2 016 companies; Healthcare gives 7 423. Before today that filter existed only for companies in the Y Combinator directory, which is a small slice of the catalogue.

Why it took a rewrite rather than a checkbox

The industry field was already there. The problem was what it held: two different vocabularies stacked on top of each other, so AI and Artificial Intelligence sat side by side as separate values, along with FinTech against Fintech and leftovers from an old import like Tech, Software & IT Services. A filter built on that would have split every industry across several entries and quietly missed companies under whichever spelling you did not click.

So the field now runs through one curated list of 74 industries. Anything outside it is not stored — no guessing, no inventing a category from a label nobody agreed on. 105 212 companies carry at least one industry today.

Also on company pages

While the catalogue was open we filled two gaps that had nothing to do with filtering:

  • 16 601 companies gained a link to their actual website, where there was none before.
  • 9 858 companies gained a short description.

Existing descriptions and links were left alone — the new data only filled blanks.
